Unit 1A.4 Multimedia Technology and Consumption
1. Convergence: Give a definition of this. What form did early convergence take? And give some examples of present day technological convergence.
2. Interactivity: In what ways is digital technology interactive? Can you give some examples. How has this changed the way we consume the media?
3. Personalisation: How do we personalise our technology and what is the reason for this?
4. Fill in the table:
Definition Advantages Disadvantages
Convergence:
Linking media content to other computers, in the 1990's when the internet started up because the internet was going to replace broadcasting. example Star wars or Spider-Man started off as films then cartoons, video games, books, comics and action figures as well.
Interactivity:
The ability of a computer to respond to a user's input. For example in Argos they have I pads so you can access the catalogue and pre- order your stuff this helps customers and workers by speeding up queuing lines making it easier to get your products from Argos or you can reserve your products online. this has changes the way we consume media because now we can purchase things online and order things online and collect them the next day, this saves people travelling to shops to buy their product sand there is less chance of the product being out of stock.
Personalisation:
The ability to be able to customize your personal settings to suit your needs e.g. changing your personal home screen on your computer. this makes you feel like you own the product and the product is made for you.
Immediacy:
Putting someone involved and making them fell excited. Or a sense of urgency.
You are involving others creating an exciting environment. And you are able to get the best work out of them, example if somebody has to write a 800 word essay in 2 hours. Limited time and causes anxiety, this can cause stress e.g. if you are in an exam and you have only 5 minutes left and you are stuck on question and you cant think of an answer. Or if you revise for a test then forget the answers.
Access:
Digital online content can be used, read or viewed by people with disabilities.
It enables people with disabilities to view content to use it or read it. It allows to access software for people with disabilities. E.g. if somebody is deaf and they cant hear they can use subtitles to help them read and understand.
If the person is blind or has a serious disability they will not be able to use the software unless
somebody is there with that person to help them use the software.
Convenience:
The state of being able to proceed with something without difficulty. Example Snap-chat services need too suit the need of the users and not difficult for them to use. Disadvantages: in the modern world we live in most things are difficult for humans to use technology which means in the future this causes job loss for humans replacing them with robots.
Portability:
The ability to be easily carried or moved. Example portable chargers advantages: they are small, light and portable furthermore the supply a lot of power and battery life to your phone, disadvantages: they only have a short lifespan depending on the value of the portable charger. Secondly PlayStation controllers, on the old PlayStation systems the controllers used to be analogue which meant you had to plug them in and you couldn't move however the good thing was they never did. Now days they are more digital they are wireless which means they die after the battery has died but you can charge them.
Connectivity:
Being connected or interconnected, e.g. Facebook being able connect with others around the world and be contact with them without be charged anything. This is good for businesses to connect with other businesses. Also social media allows to discover new people; however, its harder for people born before technology became a huge part of modern day life to use unlike people like me who were born in this generation and its not had to use it.
Interviews:
From what I have gathered is that firstly, most people use Phones and laptops for social media.
Secondly, the most common apps are Instagram, snap-chat, house-party and Facebook .
Finally most people agreed and said digital technology is good because its educational and it allows us to do things we have never done before.
